They all count: This exotic male Ocellated Turkey, at home in the Yucatan’s dark forests, is measured the same as a darting Black-capped Chickadee visiting your backyard bird feeder by eBird, a pioneering project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Fun and easy to use, eBird allows you to record, retrieve and archive all your bird sightings through an interactive, on-line Web site (www.ebird.org).

By Chris Woods

How many of you enjoy recording the birds you observe in your backyard? What about birds you see on a trip to a local park or farther afield? But how many of you feel that your personal observations are of scientific value? At the Cornell Lab of Ornithology we think that observations of birds made by birders when pulled together can be a valuable resource for gathering baseline data on the distribution and abundance of birds. We’ve developed eBird (www.ebird.org) to capture these data via the Internet, and make them available to interested parties whether they are amateur birders, experts, scientists or conservation biologists. No longer will the observations of birders languish in dusty notebooks or on the crashed hard drives of home computers; eBird now has the capacity to gather, store, and disseminate these data to conservationists around the world!
