Fast food: Equivalent of a stop at the local fast food joint, a bird feeder supplies a quick and easy meal for birds. Winter’s shorter feeding hours along with the need for more food to keep warm, will have the birds taking advantage of a variety of feeders to supply their needed calories. While birds, like this Northern Cardinal, still take most of their food from wild sources, feeders can make winter survival easier for the birds while providing us with hours of entertainment.

Winter is a popular time for bird feeding. Though wild birds have ample access to natural sources of food outside, they will readily visit a bird feeder. In winter the amount of daylight to search for food is much shorter than in the summer. So, like any busy working adult, birds look for fast and easy sources of food. Your bird feeding station isn’t too different from a drive through hamburger joint for people.
