Hedbom Forest Road — Aitkin County, Minnesota

Some birders might think there are no good birding areas left to discover. That we know all the good birding areas that will ever be discovered seems to be a commonly held belief. I must admit to being one who agrees with Kim Eckert’s quote from his exhaustive treatment of birding in Minnesota. It seems as if there aren’t birders getting out to just wander the back roads looking for that next great birding spot anymore.

In mid-December of 2006, as my wife, Cindy, began to show me her favorite, out-of-the-way spots in Aitkin County there was one new birding area that stuck with me (I don’t know how it can be considered new when Cindy has been visiting the area for decades!). When we revisited that spot to follow-up on some woodpecker scaling we had observed earlier in the year this road zoomed to the top of my favorite birding areas.
