Black Bear hibernation

This week finds me in the cold and snowy woods of central Minnesota again, not far from where I wrote to you the last time about the American Three-toed Woodpecker. This time I am in the company of something much larger and certainly much fuzzier. I am inside a mother Black Bear’s (Ursus americanus) winter den.

Some of you may be familiar with the mother Black Bear that I worked with for my children’s book, Baby Bear Discovers the World by Adventure Publications. This bear is the same mother bear that is hibernating in her den. What is so exciting is that she gave birth to two tiny cubs, one black and the other brown, just three weeks ago. I was here on the day she gave birth and now I am back to photograph this new bear family.
