He has archived almost 3,000 North American bird song recordings with Cornell, and has traveled to all the great birding sites from the Florida Keys to Nome, from southern Mexico to Churchill. Hundreds of his recordings have also been published by Cornell including five compact discs (CDs) featuring regional audio guides to the bird songs of North America. His program will feature some his most memorable recording experiences such as the Five-striped Sparrow in Sycamore Canyon, AZ, Mangrove Cuckoo in Sugarloaf Key, FL; Red-throated Pipit in Nome, AK; and Buff-colored Nightjar in the Santa Rita grasslands of AZ among others. Lecture: Chimney Swifts - Natural History and Rehabilitation |
7:30 p.m. |
|
| |
7:30 p.m. at Holliday Park, Indianapolis. Speaker: Shirley Needham. Free.
Shirley Needham is a wildlife rehabilitator from Rochester, Indiana. She will talk about her specialty, the Chimney Swift. She is active in SwiftWatch, a citizen-based program designed to collect and compile information on the location of stopover areas used by swifts during migration. Each year, millions of Chimney Swifts migrate from their breeding grounds in eastern North America to the Amazon basin, where they spend the winter months. During migration, Chimney Swifts spend the night in communal roosts. Individual roost structures may host several thousand individuals at the same time or tens of thousands during the entire migration period. Roost structures may be used by migrant swifts each year for decades. Because so many individuals congregate in relatively few locations, the systematic loss of historic roost structures may lead to negative consequences on a species-population level. Information needed to develop conservation strategies for the protection of swift stopover areas is currently lacking.

Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner served at 6 p.m.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Mark LaSalle, Manager of the National Audubon Society's Gulf Coast Project
Impacts of Hurricane Katrina on Birds and Other Wildlife
Tickets: $40, students $20
One of Dr. LaSalle's interests is to encourage people at all levels to learn more about their environment and take part in helping to preserve it. His presentation will cover the impact of Hurricane Katrina and will also highlight opportunities to engage people throughout the U.S. in Operation Backyard Recovery. This post-Katrina program encourages people to build birdhouses that can support cavity-nesting birds that lost their home trees (and associated cavities) to Hurricane Katrina. It also focuses on the long-term efforts associated with the Katrina Tree Recovery Campaign, a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. The idea of this program is to get bare-root native trees planted in Katrina-affected areas to help rebuild the canopy and replace the natural forest and cavities that support birds. To date, Dr. LaSalle and his associates have built thousands of bird houses and distributed over 40,000 trees, with support from throughout the United States.

Third Annual Conference |
|
|
| |
Mohican State Park, embedded in the heart of Mohican State Forest
Mohican State Park harbors one of the richest densities of breeding birds in Ohio, with over 100 species nesting there annually. This includes many of our rare hemlock-obligate species, like Canada Warbler, Winter Wren, and Hermit Thrush. At that time in May, not only will all of the resident species be back and in full tune, but there will still be migrants passing through, so the conference list should be a big one. There is also plenty of other biodiversity at Mohican, and the flora is especially rich.
We have two great keynote speakers lined up for the conference. Friday evening will feature Steve McKee, Directory of Richland County Park District, who will speak on the biodiversity of Mohican State Forest. And on Saturday evening we will have Don Kroodsma, author of The Singing Life of Birds. Don will also lead field trips/workshops on both Saturday and Sunday.
We're not ready to take reservations for the annual conference yet - check our website for an annoucement. |
