14 - 15 Lake Erie Wing Watch Weekend
Oak Harbor High School
11661 W. SR 163 - Oak Harbor, OH
1-800-441-1271
Join area naturalists and fellow bird watchers for a weekend of natural wonders. Exhibits, seminars, reception and forum focus on bird watching hints and habitats.

Lake Erie Wing Watch (LEWW) is a unique committee dedicated to promoting birding in Erie, Lorain and Ottawa counties in Ohio.

The Lake Erie Wing Watch (LEWW) areas are home to more than 300 bird species, including majestic bald eagles, colorful migratory warblers, and graceful great blue herons. Add an abundance of other wildlife, from the famous walleye to the lesser-known melanistic garter snake. Plus the region has many varieties of plant life, without which the entire ecological system of Lake Erie would change.

Located between Oak Harbor, OH to the west and Lorain, OH to the east, this waterfront region on the southern shore of Lake Erie includes marshlands, deep forests, natural springs, limestone quarries, rocky shorelines, and the only undeveloped natural estuary on the Great Lakes.

Each year, LEWW hosts an annual birding event called Lake Erie Wing Watch Weekend. The location of the event is rotated between the representative counties: Erie, Lorain & Ottawa. Plan to join us for this educational, yet fun event.

ENGLEWOOD METROPARK. Leader: Judy Espedal (274-7134). The best birding (most passerine migrants) in the Dayton area is generally the first and second weeks of May each year and Englewood MetroPark is always an outstanding place to look for them! There will no doubt be plenty of birds to watch at this optimal time of the spring migration. Plan now to join Judy to search for migrant wood warblers. To get to Englewood MetroPark, take US 40 west from I75 (north of Dayton). When you reach the east end of the dam, turn right (north) and meet at the parking lot here on US 40 (between the Dayton International Airport and the city of Englewood.) Please wear shoes/boots suitable for muddy terrain.

CAESAR CREEK GORGE. Leader: Dick Balk (886-0092). Just below the dam at the southern end of Casear Creek Lake, Caesar Creek Gorge is one of the Ohio State Nature Preserves. It features a 180 foot deep gorge with trails leading along Caesar Creek from the base of the dam to the Little Miami River two miles away. Along the creek lies a flood plain forest and at this prime time of the year, combined with a variety of other habitats in the area including woods and fields, there should be a large number of resident and migrant species of birds present there. The gorge is an excellent place for migrant warblers, as well as Pileated Woodpecker. Wild Turkey are also possible, since they’ve been reintroduced here. Although the Gorge may be familiar to you from our prior walks at Caesar Creek Lake, this year we have scheduled this spring walk at this location to see as many woodland breeding birds as possible, as well as some of the later passerine migrants. Located in Warren County, east of the town of Waynesville. Take I75 south to SR 73. East through Waynesville. After crossing US 42, go about 1 mile, then right on Clarksville Rd. Follow 2-3 miles to park road on the right. Go down the hill into the Gorge to the parking lot below the dam.

CLEAR CREEK VALLEY. Leaders: David True (305-8987) and Jennifer Monahan (435-0707). “Clear Creek Valley is one of the most pristine and secluded natural areas in Central Ohio. Variations or land surfaces, soils and climates have produced a medley of habitats that harbor more than 800 plant species and 150 species of birds, many of which are quite rare. You may catch a glimpse of turkey, deer, ruffed grouse, coyote, black vultures or even see the traces of the elusive bobcat along the parks more than 15 miles of trails.” See Clear Creek Metro Park(www.metroparks.net/ParksClearCreek.aspx). Last year the highlights included Blue-winged Warbler, many Cerulean, and Worm-eating Warbler. From I-270, take US 33 east toward Lancaster about 31 miles. From Lancaster, continue on US 33 south about seven miles to Clear Creek Road (State Route 116). Turn right on Clear Creek Road. Please check for the exact meeting location in the next Yellow Warbler or visit www.dayton.net/audubon or the Southwest Ohio Rare Bird Alert 937-640-BIRD (2473).
