Beautiful sunsets at 2:00 in the morning are only one of the special treats that await those adventurous enough to journey to remote St. Lawrence Island. Stark contrasts of ice, snow, water and rock with warm hearted residents, adrenaline boosting rare birds and––ALWAYS––the anticipation of what's waiting to be discovered are what come to my mind when I think of Gambell. The pack ice floating by the northwest tip of the island and the midnight sun reflected in the calm lead between shore and the heavier pack ice capture much of the spirit of this place.
