Mongolian Plovers are one of my favorite shorebirds. I know, I know, the correct name is Lesser Sandplover, but I like the older name better. We've seen Mongolian Plovers on three of our last four tours to Gambell. This bird was present for the better part of a week in 2006. It spent its time on the flanks of the mountain above the far bone yard. Unmistakable in breeding plumage, Mongolian Plovers possess an attractive combination of color and pattern. The white throat and forehead framed in black and bright cinnamon nape and chest are beautiful by anyone's description.
